Recognizing importance of propelling agriculture growth in improving not only the economy of the farmers but also accelerating agriculture growth in the State, the State Government established Rajendra Agricultural University on December 3, 1970 to generate skilled human resources, develop technologies for improving production and productivity of crops, improving livestock productivity and fisheries sector productivity. Over the years the University has received good support from State Government and initially three Agricultural Colleges one each at Sabour, Ranchi and Dholi and two Veterinary Colleges at Patna and Ranchi became the part of Rajendra Agricultural University. Four Agricultural Research Institutes one each at Sabour, Ranchi, Patna and Dholi were also transferred to the University by the Government. In 1981 a separate University named as Birsa Agricultural University was established with the headquarters at Ranchi. With the bifurcation of the State, Rajendra Agricultural University was the only Agricultural University in Bihar State at that time. From 1982-87 new Colleges of Dairy Technology, Faculty of Basic Sciences & Humanities, College of Home Science, College of Agriculture Engineering and College of Fisheries were opened. In addition KVKs were also established in different Agro-climatic Zones. The University again was bifurcated on August 10, 2010 with the creation of new Agriculture University at Sabour. From 7.10.2016 the University has been converted as Central Agricultural University under the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central University Act, 2016 passed by the Parliament. The RPCAU has six Faculties, 7 colleges, 7 Research Stations and 16 Krishi Vigyan Kendras. The jurisdiction and responsibility of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University with respect to teaching, research and programmes of extension education at the University level, in the field of agriculture and allied subjects shall extend to the whole country with special reference to the State of Bihar.
Since its establishment it has played a key role in generating qualified human resources not only for the State but also at national and for some international organizations. Over the years Scientists of the University have developed new varieties/technologies which have found ready acceptability by farming community and have led to increasing their production and income.
Scientists have developed high yielding varieties with inbuilt resistance against many diseases and insect pests in respect of major crops of Bihar namely rice, wheat, maize, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits and other horticultural crops including medicinal and aromatic plants. This has helped in incresing agriculture production in the State.
The University also has distinction of having 32 All India Coordinated Research Projects namely, AICRP on Honey Bee, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Soil Testing Correlation Response, Micronutrient in Soil & Plants, Rice, Agroforestry, Agro-meteorology, Irrigation Water Management, Tropical Fruits, Vegetables, Floriculture, Post Harvest Technology, Farm Implement & Machinery, Networking Project on Biofertilizer, Mushroom, Sugarcane, Oil Palm, Weed Control, Seed Technology, Maize, MULLaRP, Chickpea, Pigeonpea, Small Millet, Tuber Crops, Potato, Spices, Rapeseed & Mustard, Sunflower, Onion & Garlic and Breeder Seed Production.
The University is entrusted with the responsibility of generating and grooming the personnel for the agricultural services (Education), formulating and pursuing research activities in agriculture science (Research) and transferring the fruits of research and development to farmers and other stake holders (Extension).

Constantly strive to generate technologies for improving production of crops through generation/upgradation of, Agriculture Implements & machinery, basic and applied in agriculture and allied sciences.
Extension
Assist in the process of Transfer of Technology through the dissemination of knowledge in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture.

The mission of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University is to play pivotal role in Teaching, Research and Extension education services related to Agriculture and Allied Sciences/Sectors. The University has one College each in Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science, Fisheries Science, Basic Sciences & Humanities, College of Horticulture & Forestry besides the Post-Graduate Programme, 7 Research Stations 16 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Farmers call centre with around 1100 scientific, supporting and administrative staff, apart from a good contingent of labour force.

The University is largely supported by the Government of India which provides 100 % of the finance for conducting teaching, research, and extension activities under non-plan and also for specific schemes sanctioned under the Plan. The University is also the recipient of funds from ICAR, Government of India and several other National and International Agencies. The University takes up Research Schemes financed by the State, National and International Agencies like the ICAR, DBT, S & T, UNDP, UNICEF.

As a part of its democratic functioning, the Government of India has passed legislation in the form of Right to Information Act 2005 to create a better informed citizenry and make all the transactions of the Governmental operations transparent in order to contain corruption and promote accountability in public funded organizations.
